Although it’s hardly light holiday reading, Kenneth Sherman’s essay collection What Furies Bring is a powerful literary engagement with our post-9/11 world.
Including close readings of work by Martin Amis, John Updike, Primo Levi, and others, the book arises out of the author’s decision to seek out “literature [that] could address the most extreme circumstances,” and becomes a cri de coeurfor the power of the written word, an avowal that literature is more than “a deceptive luxury.”
What begins in darkness ends on a note of hope and uplift.
It’s a potent, worthy collection.
